From my years of automotive experience and training. Chattering solenoids are usally caused by low voltage to the solenoid or a bad (*corroded) ground side connection that uses up voltage getting throught the corrosion. Also could be either or both battery cables to lugs or battery cable connections. each connection should be checked and sandpapered as needed. 2nd. an alternator is a battery maintainer- not a battery charger. To use it often to recharge a low battery vs top off a battery that has just started an engine will shorten its life measurably. I'm sure the alternator is just as expensive as a starter at the parts department. If you need a starter check the back pages of the weekly publication Cycle News. They have specialty shops that should be less expensive and maybe quicker than the dealer. Max
